Chloroxylenol has been used successfully as an effective antimicrobial disinfectant ingredient for over 100 years, both in USA and Europe. It has demonstrated efficiency against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria (Maris, 1955; McDonnell and Russel, 1999), a wide variety of fungal organisms (Ghannoun and Rice, 1999; Giulianna et al., 1999), and against RNA and DNA viruses (Wood and Payne, 1998). Spanning a period between the early 1940’s through the 1990’s, testing showed Chloroxylenol to have little or no toxicity in vitro by almost any route (oral, dermal, inhalation, and ingestion). ENVIRONMENTAL ACCEPTABILITY The active ingredient, Chloroxylenol, readily degrades in rivers, sewage and activated sludge. It has a biodegradability of 70% after 7 days with the degradation products of xylenols and unchanged toxicity.
